Sean Dobson

Chief Executive Officer and Chairman

Mr. Dobson has been the head mortgage analyst and trader at Amherst Securities since he joined the firm in 2000. Mr. Dobson is widely recognized as one of the leading strategists in the industry and an expert in all facets of the mortgage business including loans, RMBS and related derivatives. He has led the development of Amherst's loan level diagnostic system (ALIAS) that is well-known for its predictive analytics. In 2006, he made a vocal announcement predicting the coming meltdown in the mortgage markets based on research produced using these tools.  In August 2008, he successfully completed a $225 million capital raise led by Stone Point Capital to expand the broker dealer and finance new initiatives in CMBS, advisory and asset management.
Mr. Dobson has over 20 years of experience in the mortgage industry, including previous senior management positions with Spires Financial and the MMAR Group, Inc. He currently serves as a board member of the American Securitization Forum, and his advice on mortgage policy matters is regularly sought by congressional leaders, housing policy leaders at the Treasury and other government agencies and senior administration officials at the White House.

David Gussmann

Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager

Mr. Gussmann has been the head of AAM portfolio management since its inception and has over 15 years experience in the mortgage industry. Prior to joining Amherst in 2010, he spent 3 years at Fannie Mae where he most recently worked as VP, Enterprise Risk Management. In this position he had responsibility for Fannie Mae’s Non-Agency residential mortgage-backed securities and commercial mortgage-backed securities portfolios and developed Fannie Mae’s Non-Agency RMBS loss mitigation program, which was focused on enforcement of investor rights. From 2001 to 2007, Mr. Gussmann was employed by LoanPerformance, serving as Senior Vice President of Product Development and Operations and as a member of the Executive Committee. In this role, he was a key member of the management team during the firm’s development into a leading provider of mortgage data and analytical services. He is an inventor of United States Patent 7,809,635, a method and system for updating a loan portfolio with information on secondary liens. Mr. Gussmann received his MBA from the J.L. Kellogg School of Management and BA in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Ramon de Castro

Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Mr. de Castro has been Chief Operating Officer since AAM's inception and has over 19 years of experience in the mortgage industry.  Prior to joining AAM, he was a Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer for Amherst Holdings, the parent company of AAM, from 2009 to 2010. Mr. de Castro served as Fannie Mae’s Senior Vice President, Capital Markets from 2006 to 2009, overseeing all mortgage trading for the retained portfolio as well as all structured mortgage securitizations. Mr. de Castro served as Fannie Mae’s Vice President, Portfolio Transactions from 1999 to 2006, and held various positions with Fannie Mae dating back to 1991.  He received his MBA from the University of Chicago and BA in Political Economy from Johns Hopkins University.

Michael Sullivan

Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Sullivan, CPA, joined Amherst in 2005. He was previously SVP-CFO of Guaranty Residential Lending, Inc., (f.k.a. Temple-Inland Mortgage Company). Prior to Guaranty, Mr. Sullivan served as the President & CFO of the Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation, and began his 16-year career in the mortgage finance business with the Lomas Financial Group. He earned his BBA in accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Darla Bartkowiak

Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer

Ms. Bartkowiak has managed Amherst's compliance initiatives since 2002. She has over 30 years of securities industry experience, including experience in trading, sales and back office operations. Prior to joining Amherst, she engaged in compliance consulting, and previously worked in compliance positions with FINRA in Dallas and Southwest Securities. Ms. Bartkowiak is a FINRA Industry Arbitrator and currently holds several industry licenses. She graduated with honors from Amberton University with a BS in Human Relations and Business.

Richard Magel

Managing Director - Operations

Mr. Magel has over 25 years experience in mortgage banking and has managed all aspects of mortgage banking including originations, servicing, and secondary marketing. His prior experience includes SVP of Executive Administration for Lomas Mortgage USA, President of Winstar Mortgage Partners, and 11 years with Guaranty Residential Lending as Chief Operating Officer. His accomplishments include operating a $10 billion a year origination and 100,000 loan servicing platform, extensive M&A experience, development of several asset or investment M&A structures, and management of multiple conduits and operational platforms.  Mr. Magel received his BS from the School of Communications at The University of Texas in Austin, Texas.

Paul Cuccurullo

Vice President and Senior Counsel

Prior to joining AAM in 2011, Mr. Cuccurullo was a counsel in the Investment Funds and Securitization practice of O’Melveny & Myers LLP and also acted as an independent consultant for matters related to that firm.  Mr. Cuccurullo has also has been an associate in the securitization practices of McKee Nelson LLP (now part of Bingham McCutchen LLP) and Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP.  His prior experience also includes working within the new product development group (global structured finance, fixed income) at Banc of America Securities LLC.  While with the aforementioned law firms, he represented sponsors, issuers, underwriters, borrowers, lenders, private equity funds and other institutions in connection with a range of financial matters, including RMBS securitizations and other asset-backed transactions.  Mr. Cuccurullo received his JD, cum laude, from Brooklyn Law School and his BS in Psychology from Stony Brook University.
